The Heartwood Holly Arboretum encompasses over 300 stunning mature holly trees and shrubs.

 

Most are native American Holly (Ilex opaca), native Winterberry (Ilex verticillata), and native Inkberry (Ilex glabra). A select few nonnative hollies are included.

 

The Heartwood Holly Arboretum is a Holly Society of America Certified Arboretum and Test Center, meeting high standards in plant longevity, educational labeling, and research for hardiness. Heartwood is one of only 18 holly arboretums in the country to share this distinction, along with the U.S. National Arboretum, Longwood Gardens, and other institutions​​​​.

Planted by Heartwood owner Sue Hunter over 30 years ago, the Heartwood Holly Arboretum is a beautiful ecological haven. In the winter, multitudes of birds feast on its berries. In the spring, moths and other pollinators enjoy its flowers.

 

The arboretum features 75 American Hollies, which Sue considers the crown jewel of horticulture.​​​​​​​​​​​
