Winter Solstice Nature Journaling
Monday, December 21 | 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Celebrate the longest night of the year by slowing down, tuning into the natural world, and setting intentions for the returning light at this special gathering.
Whether you're a seasoned journalist or first-timer, join us for a nature journal gathering to mark the Winter Solstice with Pennsylvania Master Naturalist Mary Patterson and Heartwood owner Sue Hunter.
What you'll do: We'll meet at the fire pit in the hut in the Heartwood Holly Arboretum. Following group introductions, Sue will share how the Winter Solstice is significant to Holly trees, and Mary will suggest journaling prompts.
You'll then have approximately one hour of journaling time. You're free to stay fireside or choose another location on the property. Afterward, we'll re-gather at the Holly hut for group sharing of experience, intention, and/or journal entries. Everyone's welcome to share or to just listen. We'll conclude with hot beverages around the fire pit.
What to bring: Dress for the outdoors and the weather, with appropriate shoes, outerwear, and layers. If it's a super cold day, a blanket may be a good option! (In the event an outdoor fire isn't possible, there's an indoor option.) Bring a notebook or sketch book and writing utensil(s). Other suggested supplies: watercolor paints, water brush, color pencils/pens, and portable chair if you have a personal favorite.
New to nature journaling? Welcome. Supply kits will be available to purchase if needed. Kits include mini watercolor set, water brush, mini color pencils, waterproof black pen, and more. See registration page for complete list.

Sue Hunter
A pioneer in native plant propagation and horticulture, Sue founded Heartwood Nursery in 1987. Passionate about sustaining healthy ecosystems, Sue propagated and grew native trees and shrubs for wholesale, bucking the widespread industry preference for nonnative ornamentals. Today, as one of the largest native plant nurseries offering wholesale and retail in the Mid-Atlantic region, Heartwood offers more than 300+ native species and is the national leader in American Holly propagation.

Heartwood Nursery
Heartwood comprises 35 acres of working native plant nursery grounds and 35 acres of woodland. The entire Heartwood property is preserved with the Farm and Natural Lands Trust of York County, protecting it from any future development. Learn more about the Heartwood land.
